OS39 at Salmon Creek Farm

10/05/18

This September marked another trip to Salmon Creek Farm in Mendocino, where students met and worked with artist Fritz Haeg on the property and in the gardens and dancer/mover Natan Daskal on Anna Halprin movement exercises. We also met two of the original communards, Dawn and Bob, and enjoyed a surprise lunchtime visit from Head of School Michael Williamson! Visit Salmon Creek Farm's website for more information on what Fritz is up to there, and the the history of the commune. Special thanks to Owen R for writing about our time there:

Last weekend, Megan and Alex accompanied the students in Printmaking at the time to Fritz Haeg’s home, Salmon Creek Farm. We drove there Thursday and arrived as the sun was setting over the ocean out below the road. The sky was beautiful, and we arrived at Salmon Creek, essentially built into a sloping forest in the valley, as the sun broke softly through the trees, casting deep shadows among the light. Salmon Creek was amazing and the structures we stayed in, ate in, and made use of were all incredible and original to when Salmon Creek was established in 1971. It’s a sort of commune, farm, sanctuary for friends, and school all mixed into one place. An artist named Natan was staying there at the time and helped us to participate in several different activities having to do with spatial and personal awareness. The triangular deck recently made for the Farm was perfect for the personal “scores” we were acting out and creating. Fritz and his dog, Zucca, were always around and happy to talk or, on Zucca’s part, play. We helped Fritz with a lot of cool activities, one of which was picking and pressing apples from the orchard. We also helped to prepare the meals and on the last night, we all had the opportunity to make delicious pizzas in the wood-fired clay pizza oven. Our experience enabled us each to foster a better understanding of how we perceive and interact with what’s around us. It was both very refreshing and very much appreciated by all of us. Thank you, Fritz!
