AROUND
THE BEND
Finally!!
I am so pleased to actually be sending you this first edition of Oxtales,
the Oxbow School email newsletter. Many alumni stay in contact with
us here in Napa in various ways, and we wanted to provide a means
for those farther away to stay connected and let us know where theyare
and what they are doing. As the school moves forward, I welcome the
opportunity for more alumni to play an active role in Oxbow’s
future. In this, the ninth year with students, many aspects of the
program are maturing—most importantly our alumni. We have come
full circle in a sense, as our first Oxbow students are now graduating
from college, and last year, we were able to make our first alumni
hires. Lenora Ditzler, OS1, spent last year as an intern assisting
the faculty, and Jordan Felling, OS5, continues in her role as Admissions
Liaison. The alumni legacy continues this year with Case Conover,
OS4, working as the intern for the current semester, OS17.
We also wanted this newsletter to reach out to new audiences, so hopefully,
as you read these articles, you will think of someone who should know
about Oxbow and hit the forward key to send this news on its way.
So, I welcome you to this new iteration of the Oxbow community and
hope this newsletter becomes a new arena for sharing the Oxbow experience.

Lenora
Ditzler Lenora
has the double honor of being a member of the first semester—OS1!—and,
last year, being the first alumni to be hired to work in the semester
program. After graduating from Bowdoin with a double major in Art
and Environmental Studies, Lenora came back to Oxbow as an intern
for OS15 and OS16. As you might imagine, intern training was much
easier with an alum, and Lenora brought fully developed leadership
skills to the job. Lenora also authored the first fully realized Intern
Handbook, so that the position isn't created from scratch each year.
Last summer, after Oxbow, Lenora spent the summer working on a salmon
fishing boat in Alaska, she is currently back on her island of Vinalhaven,
Maine, working in a printmaking studio and applying for a Fulbright
fellowship to research fisheries and art in—Norway!
Jordan
Felling
After graduating
from MICA: The Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore with
a BFA in photography, a concentration in printmaking and minor in
art history, I called Stephen Thomas to consult with him about what
could be next for me given this fresh foundation of skills. After
a few energetic conversations, Stephen asked me if I would consider
traveling on the road, as an alum representing the school. I immediately
sent off my professional packet his way, and have now come full circle,
joining this creative community and spreading the word about this
dynamic program.
Case
Conover, OS 4, has joined the Oxbow Community as our Intern
this year. After coming to Oxbow as a junior, Case graduated from
high school in Maine. He then attended Oberlin College in Ohio, majoring
in studio art. In 2006, Case took some time off from Oberlin to undertake
an adventure – he hiked the entirety of the Appalachian Trail
on his own.
After graduating
from Oberlin, Case has come full circle back to Oxbow. He has been
assisting Patrick with Sculpture studio classes and teaches a co-curricular
activity, appropriately called “Fun with Case!” Case is
thrilled to be giving back to a place that helped to make him into
the person he is today.

The
Annual Fund supports the program beyond the limits of tuition revenue
and allows us to provide our students with authentic exposure to artistic
problem solving and intellectual inquiry. Program elements such as
the Visiting Artists residency, studio and museum visits, and a nutritious,
organic meal plan, help to grow each student's awareness of the possibilities
in their lives.
