AROUND THE BEND

Friends—OS18 is in the house (!) and we find ourselves, here in the middle of the Oxbow’s ninth year, at a high point in the school’s history. While we still rely on your annual fund contributions as the major element in our fundraising effort, we find ourselves ahead of last year’s pace and are hopeful of reaching our goal—keep those donations coming in! Enrollment for next year is strong: we already have 50 applicants for fall 2008 and expect that after our March 1st application deadline we can be really selective and invite a strong group of students for OS19. And the excitement is building for our May 31st benefit—a fiesta on the riverbank honoring Alice Waters.

I encourage all of you to find your way back to Oxbow for the compelling lectures scheduled for this semester. Leonard Shlain’s lecture on his work in progress, Leonardo’s Brain, filled the Copia theater last Monday and left the audience buzzing with his thoughts on how visual media are affecting brain evolution—what kinds of minds are we growing in this digital era?

As we eagerly anticipate the brief respite of Early Break, we are also gearing up for this semester’s first Artist Residency: Katy Stone, a sculptor and installation artist from Seattle. For those of you who cannot attend her lecture on February 25th, her own site www.katystone.net is under construction, but selections of her work can be seen online at www.gregkucera.com/stone.htm and www.neuhoffgallery.com/artists/stone/works.php. Chicago artist Dawoud Bey will join the Oxbow community for the second residency of the semester at the end of March. See his work at www.dawoudbey.net

Finally, for the adults in the audience, last call for the Summer Adults workshops scheduled for June 13-22, 2008, there are still spaces open in photography and printmaking call or email ASAP! This is a week of great fun and gets your summer off to an inspiring start.

- Stephen Thomas, Director and Head of School

OS17 ended on a high note, and on the Sunday of the Final Show weekend, we added a new element for the ‘fashionistas’ in the Oxbow family: a benefit sale by Christina Kim’s DOSA fashion line brought new people to the school and raised $14,000 for Oxbow. Thanks to all of you who attended and bought yourselves something nice or found the perfect gift.

Jordan Felling ventured to Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Milwaukee, Vermont, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York City.

The Admissions Committee reviews incoming applications on a rolling basis up to the point we reach the class capacity of 48 students per semester.
