Introducing the Oxbow Summer Art Institute

The Oxbow School Summer Art Institute is now fully enrolled for 2021! Interested students are encouraged to apply for the Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 semesters. We will open registration for Summer 2022 in September 2021.

OXBOW SUMMER ART INSTITUTE

At the Oxbow Summer Art Institute students will have the opportunity to have the social, intellectual, and art experience that Oxbow is so well known for! Young artists are invited to immerse themselves with a customized course of creative study rooted in deep intellectual inquiry. In partnership with veteran faculty, students will create work towards an art portfolio and conclude the program with a seminal final project. Participating artists can fulfill graduation requirements while making art in well-equipped studios among like-minded peers overlooking the Napa River. In addition to extensive art-making, students will have opportunities to explore the sublime landscape that defines Northern California. They will also have access to contemporary work on exhibit at local museums around the Bay area and meet working artists in the world. This 8-week intensive is open to students in grades 10-12 as well as those taking a gap year before college. Students will receive an entire year’s worth of studio art credit with an official high school transcript. Additional credits can be earned in physical education and within the disciplines of English, Environmental Science, and History.

FAQ

Do you offer financial aid or scholarships? Due to the cancellation of our Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters, we have limited aid available. Please contact the admissions team for more information at admissions@oxbowschool.org.

Who is eligible to attend? Rising juniors, seniors and post-grad students are welcome to attend the Oxbow Summer Art Institute.

I have heard a lot about the “Final Project.” Will there still be a final show? Yes! All students will have an opportunity to pursue a topic in depth working in a medium of their choice for at least two weeks at the conclusion of the program. Students will collaborate with the faculty to execute their vision and install the work in a gallery style format. The celebratory final show is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 14th and is open to the public providing it is safe to do so at that time.

Can you describe what a typical Summer day will look like? We strive to include simplicity, mindfulness, and intentionality into our everyday practice. This isn’t typical school. Let’s celebrate the fact that it’s summer and summers are meant to be fun! While you will receive inspiring, innovative, and challenging instruction from experienced faculty, we value the time that comes from sleeping in, lounging on the lawn to read a good book, or heading into the woods for a day-long hike.
