Visiting Artists: Stephen Whisler & Sabine Reckewell

03/27/17

Many thanks to Pilar G. and Amaryllis A. for this week's write up and photos!

This weeks Visiting Artists were Sabine Reckewell and Stephen Whisler. My section began by using Stephen’s tracing method to create portraits of our peers. I made a portrait of Kyria using colors I felt conveyed her personality. The next class, we worked on making abstract paper collages. I made mine three dimensional like a page in a pop up book. My collage had more muted colors. We continued using these techniques throughout the week. On Saturday we visited their beautiful house in Napa. We got to see some of their work shown during the lecture earlier in the week. My favorite piece was the briefcase shaped like a coffin, which was both elaborate and practical. For our final piece, we will be making a group Mandala. My mandala will represent my inspirations Basquiat and my brother Sebastian (Basti). I’m excited to continue applying the techniques both the artists taught us.

Another exciting part of this week was when Eva adopted two ducklings for her Walden experiment on affection and responsibility. The ducklings names where Oren and Jamie. They were so adorable and definitely a mood booster.

This past week has flown by with Visiting Artists Stephen Whisler and Sabine Reckewell leading workshops. As Project X came to a close, our Visiting Artists switched off between introducing us to methods of collaging and pastel transfers. The first day of pastel transfers with Stephen consisted of us recreating our classmate’s photos from the first day at Oxbow. While our first day with Sabine consisted of some intense use of geometry ( ← “intense” I’m sorry I’m like this). Our Visiting Artist series comes to an end this week with our collaborative mandala project. After that, we're on to Final Projects!
